AfDB impact report: Leveraging tech for healthcare

AfDB is a financial backer of a fund supporting DataPathology, a groundbreaking project combining artificial intelligence and digital technology to combat cervical cancer in Morocco. The project is a key initiative for AfDB’s focus on leveraging technology for healthcare improvement across the continent, and targets the early detection and treatment of cervical cancer.

DataPathology uses AI to assist in diagnosing cervical cancer by analysing digital images of biopsy samples. The technology accelerates diagnosis by reducing the time required to detect abnormal cells, allowing healthcare providers to identify and treat cases at earlier stages. This is particularly crucial in the fight against cervical cancer, which is the second most common cancer among women in Africa.

The project operates through a fully digital platform that integrates AI with digital pathology tools, ensuring accuracy and efficiency. Patients’ biopsy slides are scanned and uploaded onto the platform, where the AI algorithms assist pathologists in detecting precancerous or cancerous cells. This groundbreaking innovation enhances diagnostic capacity, particularly in areas with limited access to specialised medical personnel.

One DataPathology most major successes to date is the expansion of healthcare services in underserved regions of Morocco. Through its digital infrastructure, the project has made it possible for medical experts in urban areas to remotely analyse samples from rural and remote areas. This has significantly improved access to timely and accurate diagnosis, which is critical for life-saving treatment interventions.
