Since Morocco joined the AfDB in 1964, the Bank has financed over 170 projects in the country, with a strong focus on infrastructure such as buildings and roads.
Some of the AfDB’s landmark projects include the development of Morocco’s transport network, including financing the expansion of the Rabat-Salé Airport and improving road infrastructure, which has enhanced pan-African trade and connectivity. In 2022, the Bank also supported the construction of the Tangier-Med Port, one of Africa’s largest ports, which plays a crucial role in international trade and logistics.
AfDB also contributed to Morocco’s transition to renewable energy, notably co-financing the Ouarzazate Solar Complex, the world’s largest concentrated solar power plant, in 2020. The completion of the power plant cemented Morocco’s position as a leader in Africa’s green energy transition.
Additionally, the Bank has supported water and sanitation projects throughout Morocco, such as modernising irrigation systems and improving access to drinkable water in rural areas. This has not only enhanced agricultural productivity but also improved living conditions for millions of Moroccans.
Through supporting such initiatives, AfDB has played a critical role in supporting Morocco’s infrastructure development, fostering sustainable economic growth while equally addressing challenges in energy security, water management, and regional integration. Without AfDB’s vital support, Morocco would not have earned the position of a regional leader in infrastructure and development that it currently enjoys.
