Opportunity International and Hope International of Rwanda are searching for an outstanding candidate to serve as their next Chief Executive Officer for the Urwego Opportunity Bank (UOB) located in Kigali, Rwanda. The faith-based mission of UOB is to effectively and reliably provide a ladder of opportunity to the underprivileged of Rwanda so they can attain dignity and hope, improve their lives, and become contributing members of their communities. Today, over 170,000 clients are taking advantage of the bank’s savings accounts, with more than $10.5 million in total savings. Urwego Opportunity Bank (UOB) is owned and operated as a partnership of shareholders with the largest shareholders being Opportunity International and Hope International.

 

Reporting to the Regional Director of the Africa Region and the Board of Directors, the Chief Executive Officer leads and manages Urwego Opportunity Bank (UOB). The CEO provides overall direction to the organization and ensures maximum outreach, sustainability, and transformation of the bank’s operations. The CEO will be held to the accomplishment of the following two overarching aspirations: (1) Build the corporate culture which reflects the core Christian values of its co-shareholders, Opportunity International and Hope International; and (2) Lead a fiscally responsible, and strategically viable financial institution/bank with integrity to its clients and under the oversight of the Central Bank of Rwanda.

 

The successful candidate will be a strong, communicative leader with a minimum of 15 years overall relevant work experience, a minimum ten of which should have been board or senior management positions in a retail bank or similar financial services company. This person will have advanced knowledge of banking and business law, with a keen awareness of microfinance strongly preferred. They will have a firm understanding of delegation, relationship-building, and decision-making; diplomatic interpersonal skills are important. S/he will also have a commitment to mission and vision of the shareholders, including a personal confession of faith in Jesus Christ.
