The continent’s banking trends revealed by our 2025 report

Our annual survey of Africa’s top 100 banks reveals that the continent’s sector is holding its ground, if not performing spectacularly.

The greatest strength in depth among banks in Africa is to be found in North Africa, bolstered by Morocco and Egypt.

As Africa’s fastest-growing banking region, all the banks at the top of our East African table have recorded strong growth over the past year.

South Africa’s biggest banks dominate our ranking as usual, with a huge footprint at home and in the wider region.

The region’s banking sector is eagerly awaiting the completion of Nigeria’s bank recapitalisation programme.
