Togbe Afede XIV, known in private life as James Akpo, is the chairman of Strategic African Securities, a stock brokerage firm; CEO of Strategic Initiatives, a private equity and investment company and partner in a joint venture with Shenzhen Energy of China and China Africa Development Fund in Sunon Asogli Power Ltd, an independent power producer, and also founder of Navigator Communications & Technology Co Ltd and Africa World Airlines.

Tobge Afede is also the traditional ruler of the Asogli State in the Volta Region, from which position he set up and chairs the Volta Region Development Agency.

Togbe earned a BSc in Administration (Accounting) from the University of Ghana and proceeded to do his national service at the Bank for Housing and Construction, performing financial analysis of loan applications, and working with clients to fashion short- and long-term loans and financial packages. It is perhaps here that Tobge discovered a passion and knack for finances.

Togbe received a scholarship from Yale School of Management, graduating with a Master’s in Business Administration in 1989.

On returning to Ghana, it was while lecturing at the University of Ghana that Togbe joined in the founding of Databank Financial Services Ltd. At the end of 1993 he left Databank and founded Strategic African Securities (SAS), also a stock brokerage firm. In 1999, he founded Strategic Initiatives Limited.

As a pioneer, Togbe played a critical role in the development of Ghana’s capital markets including developing and publishing the first ever stock market indices in 1991.

Togbe Afede serves on a number of boards in the public and private sector, among Aluworks Ltd, an aluminium rolling mill listed on the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE); the Bank of Ghana; and Trans Africa Telecom Ltd, which is seeking a unified telecommunications system for
West Africa.

He chairs the boards of Accra Hearts of Oak Sporting Club Ltd, an African football giant based in Accra; China Africa Co Ltd, an international trading and business representation firm; Pioneer Kitchenware Ltd, an aluminum hollowware manufacturer listed on the GSE; SAS Finance Group Ltd & SAS Investment Management Ltd; Strategic Initiatives Ltd; and Sunon Asogli Power (Ghana) Ltd.
